Earth Symphony (Excerpts) - Jake Runestad, Todd Boss
"Earth Symphony" (excerpts). Jake Runestad, composer. Todd Boss, librettist. Performed by True Concord Voices & Orchestra. Eric Holtan, conductor. Video/audio by Arizona PBS. More info: earth-symphony.com Winner of a 2022 EMMY® Award for Musical Composition.
Excerpts:
00:00 -- I. Evolution
03:33 -- II. Ambition
05:02 -- III. Destruction
07:01 -- IV. Lament
09:01 -- V. Recovery
“Earth Symphony,” the EMMY® award-winning, ground-breaking choral symphony from GRAMMY® nominated composer Jake Runestad and librettist Todd Boss, is a 5-part dramatic monologue from the voice of post-anthropocene Mother Earth. The work imagines Earth’s hope for humanity, her discovery of its power, her ruination at its hands, her lament at its loss, and her recovery. By anthropomorphizing Earth herself, “Earth Symphony” enables entry into our own ecological shame, guilt, responsibility, potential, and redemption, all from a wide-angled, time-telescoped lens, thereby asking our most immediately pressing environmental questions in an entirely new way.
EARTH SYMPHONY
Libretto by Todd Boss
I. Evolution
Forever alone -
four billion years of empty
space and dormant stone.
Then you were born:
Humankind!
and soon upon your face
there dawned a trace of mind!
You scorned the odds
to be reborn as gods of reason,
authors of wonder,
inventors of alchemy,
chemistry, astronomy.
You alone unwound
the helix of my chi. You
mirrored me to me.
Mirabilia!
You were my light.
Never shall I dare to dream
another dream so bright.
II. Ambition
And how are you fallen so
soon?
Do you remember Icarus,
whose father gave him
wings of wax and feathers
for a toy?
There he is - in memory’s eye -
canary of a boy!
[Icarus:] O, joy - so much
at hand! - to soar
the strand, over sea
and shore! Whee! - to taste
ambition pure!
Two wingbeats more,
and I can see the patterns
on the ocean floor.
O, me!
I’m free as albatross! Stronger
than ever with a father so
clever with beeswax and
feather! I flap them together
and higher and higher I rise! -
I am a dream!
I’ll touch the moon!
How small she is - the blue-
green planet far below…
I belong to her no longer.
Who am I, without her?
The sun.
The sun grows.
The sun grows ever hotter…
[Earth:] Yes I remember Icarus,
who flew too near the sun.
Waxen wings undone,
he tumbled, thrashing, and
came crashing
into the sea!
So fell humanity.
So fell I.
III. Destruction
Timore atmosphaeram, you
make your mother torturer!
Twist me against my nature,
waste me to tinder,
roast me under the
torches of the sun
till I’m undone.
You dam my
waters,
bleach
my corals, flood me,
strangle me,
slaughter each other,
set me
on fire!
I am rage! I am war!
Where are your gods now?
Mirabilia!
What have you done,
over-blessed one?
Briefest of species,
what have you done?
IV. Lament
Sleep now, my children, now your days are done.
Nevermore shall you adore the setting of the sun.
Sleep now, forever, lofted in time.
No seraphim to rouse thee, no carillons to chime.
Mirabilia!
Never shall I dare to dream a dream so bright.
Sleep now, my children, my wonder, my light.
Never shall I dare to dream another dream so bright.
Mirabilia!
Never shall I dare to dream a dream so bright.
Sleep now, my children, though the cradle fall.
You rest among the yesterdays, the softest place of all.
Mirabilia!
V. Recovery
Alone forever,
the mirror
dims.
Empty
space.
Dormant
stone.
No. I shall not go alone.
Ivy shall recover every avenue,
seaweed swallow every drain,
and forestry sow a sorcery
over every human stain.
None shall weep, and none shall witness,
while my wordless work is done.
Slowly, in the shell of a factory,
a gray whale, circling aimlessly,
writes a disappearing history
in the shadows of the deep,
and none shall weep.
There shall come a day
like the first day,
so heavenly,
so clear.
Mirabilia,
you would love it here.

I first heard this song at one of my highschool concerts about 5 years ago. A student had committed suicide that year which is why they sang this song. I didn't know him, but several people in the honor choir did. Despite having sang the song several times before, most of the choir members cried on stage. I remember sitting on a railing in the back and this song felt like a deep stab to my soul, like it was ripped open. Like I was bleeding out, yet no blood was there. Like I would open my mouth and no words would come out. That was during a very rough period in my life where suicide was on my mind nearly every day. I searched up this song and found this video. Since then, it has made me cry alone while stopping me from commiting suicide more times than I will ever admit to anyone. This is the very first video on what is now a nearly 40 song playlist that I listen to whenever it comes back. And after all this time, I am still here. Thank you so very much.

I had the great pleasure of having Jake Runestad come and conduct my choir for a rehersal of this piece. It’s still in my memory, and I’m grateful that we got to have such a close connection to origins of the song. I hope any that are grieving can find peace ❤

Mr. Runestad, I want to thank you for this song. My senior year of high school, we had a student in our choir take his own life. We were already learning this song, but it took on a whole new meaning after he passed. We even sang it at his funeral. It helped me express the overwhelming emotion that affected me in that time. It was not my first time dealing with someone close to me taking their own life, and though I pray otherwise, I doubt it will be the last. The scariest part was, I understood why he did it. I nearly followed suit not long after. But songs like yours kept me here. So thank you, for comforting those affected, and for helping to save my life.

There is so much wonderful tone painting in this piece.. from the whisper of a prayer, to the ahhs being the angels wings as they float up to heaven, to the prayer gradually growing to a plea of angush, and a cry out to God. I saved my fathers life in 2007 because when the paramedics couldnt find anything wrong I went against their recommendation and took him to a hospital. It happened again in 2018 when he was visiting from overseas and i had a gut feeling he was hiding something from me. The third time he caught CoVid. I tried to come save him again but the czech republic closed to border because of the severity of the pandemic. I failed and he paseed away. As ridiculous as it sounds I still believe that had I been able to get there I could have saved him one more time. Just the text of the poetry is enough to draw tears. The music, however adds so much, however Its almost as the words and the music were meant to be together. I wish I had heard this piece in the time after my father passed. It would have helped me so much.

I remember singing this in HS, and this was the video our director used to introduce us to this piece. To this day, all these years later, I still come back and listen to it. It still channels all the emotions that I dug into when singing as an S1, a range I’ve lost to damage and time. I mourned then the people I’ve lost in my life, and now the person I used to be as well.

welp revisiting this in my bedroom with the lights off on halloween night before bed was a mistake but no seriously, this was shown to us a few years ago in choir during my senior year of high school. it really makes you appreciate bethoven more and the tragedy. just when you're at the top of your life and prime of your career, this, why is it his hearing that was taken away. no doubt the man questioned his existence, God, and the universe. Why him, why now, why like this?

Earlier this week I heard this song for the first time. UWF’s choir performed it. As a kid who never grew up properly to this type of music, I was never super passionate about this. Then the silence came. There was a good 30 seconds where I was heavily confused. “Are they not singing at all, or am I deaf- OHHHH.” It hit me in my mind. Then I reminisced on the lyrics. This is a very powerful and emotional piece. We always take advantage of our hearing in our lives instead of appreciating it. A life without music is a life of never ending pain. “Without soul” as someone else put it. We can only imagine what Beethoven went through during this period. The fact that he was still able to keep going was impressive. Overall an awesome piece that put me back into love for this style of music. Great stuff! •_• <3
